Erm, if you are visiting the big cities, you can get by with English. But out of the cities, it's good to know a bit of Portuguese and about the local culture.

Oh dear, I am hopeless with languages. They are so difficult to master and take years to learn. I don't have years. I've got weeks to sort out my adventure.

A language crash course! When you are on a crash course, you learn about something in a very short period of time.

Well, that depends on your learning ability. I think you'd master the basics without any trouble. Here are a few more examples of crash courses on offer:

Oh I get it! 'To take a back seat' is an idiom that means to give up control and let someone else take responsibility.

No Feifei - that would have hurt. This is an expression that describes a dangerous or unpleasant situation that has only just been avoided. It almost happened... but it didn't.
아니 페이페이. 그랬으면 아팠겠지. 이건 겨운 간신히 피한 위험하거나 불쾌한 상황을 묘사하는 표현이야. 거의 일어날 뻔 했으나 그러지 않았단거지.

Lucky for you! So you're saying you nearly had an accident but you didn't?

Yes, that's another way of putting it. Basically it means you take a long time to say or do something, when in reality it can be done or said a lot quicker. Let's hear some examples of the phrase 'to go around the houses' in action...
맞아, 그걸 다른 말로하면 그렇지. 기본적으로 네가 뭔갈 말하거나 행동하는데 시간이 오래 걸린다는 뜻이야, 실제로 훨씬 빨리 말하고 해도되는 것일 때도 말이야.
"집 주변으로 돌아가다"란 표현 실제로 어떻게 쓰이는지 예시를 들어보자.

Don't go around the houses; just tell me straight, what have you done?

So the phrase done and dusted means work on something is completely finished. When I heard you say dust, I thought you were asking me if I had cleaned the house. No way, I only got the keys yesterday! I haven't even set foot in the house yet.
그러니까 이 표현 "다 끝내고 먼지도 털었어" 뜻이 작업하던 일이 완전히 끝났다는 거구나.

Done and dusted is actually a very common expression. We hear it a lot at work. And usually it means something has been completed successfully, there's no more work to be done on it. Let's hear some examples.
다 끝내고 먼지 털었어는 실제로 정말 흔히 쓰는 표현이야. 직장에서 많이 듣지. 그리고 보통 무언가가 성공적으로 끝나서 이것에 대해선 더 이상 할일이 없다는 뜻이야. 예시를 좀 들어보자.

Examples

The dispute between me and the council about my parking ticket has been resolved. It's done and dusted.
주차권에 대해 나와 위원회사이의 분쟁이 해결됬어, 완전히 끝났어.

Afer two months of hard work, the project is finally done and dusted.
2달 여간 열심히 일한 후에 그 프로젝트가 드디어 끝났어.

About this logo design... as far as I'm concerned, it's done and dusted.

Done and dusted is a popular casual expression, it's used to talk about something that's finished successfully.
다 끝내고 먼지 털었어는 정말 많이 쓰는 편한 표현이구나, 성공적으로 완료된 무언가에 대해 이야기할 때 쓰는거구.

I don't know. I've got assignments to write, exams to take - and look at my house, it's a mess, I've got to tidy up.

RobOh calm down. Anyway, when are your exams?

A chill pill? Oh right, let's have a look (she looks through her box of medicines)... paracetamol... aspirin... no - I haven't got any chill pills.

진정약? 오 알겠어. 어디보자 (약통을 들여다본다) 진통제...두통약...아니 진정약 없는데..

RobYou won't find them in there Helen. Chill pills aren't real. When you tell someone to take a chill pill, you are telling them to calm down and relax. So Helen... relax... chill!

거긴 없을 거야. 진정약은 실제로 있는게 아니거든. 누군가에게 진정약 좀 먹어라고 말하면

그들에게 진정하고 긴장 풀라고 말하는 거야. 그러니까 헬렌 긴장 풀어, 머리 좀 식혀!

Oh right, thanks. So the doctor isn't going to give me one?

오 알겠어. 고마워. 그러니까 의사가 주는게 아닌거지?

RobWell, I'm sure he could give you something to help you relax but this idiom is just a saying to give someone some friendly advice, as you can hear in these examples...

음, 네가 긴장 풀수 있게 도움이 될 뭔가는 주겠지만 이 관용어는 그냥 친절한 조언을 조금 주는 말이야. 다음 예시들에서 들을 수 있듯이...

She was getting so stressed about what her boss said to her that I told her to just take a chill pill - everything would be fine.
