Erm, if you are visiting the big cities, you can get by with English. But out of the cities, it's good to know a bit of Portuguese and about the local culture.

Oh dear, I am hopeless with languages. They are so difficult to master and take years to learn. I don't have years. I've got weeks to sort out my adventure.

A language crash course! When you are on a crash course, you learn about something in a very short period of time.

Well, that depends on your learning ability. I think you'd master the basics without any trouble. Here are a few more examples of crash courses on offer:

Oh I get it! 'To take a back seat' is an idiom that means to give up control and let someone else take responsibility.

No Feifei - that would have hurt. This is an expression that describes a dangerous or unpleasant situation that has only just been avoided. It almost happened... but it didn't.
아니 페이페이. 그랬으면 아팠겠지. 이건 겨운 간신히 피한 위험하거나 불쾌한 상황을 묘사하는 표현이야. 거의 일어날 뻔 했으나 그러지 않았단거지.

Lucky for you! So you're saying you nearly had an accident but you didn't?

Yes, that's another way of putting it. Basically it means you take a long time to say or do something, when in reality it can be done or said a lot quicker. Let's hear some examples of the phrase 'to go around the houses' in action...
맞아, 그걸 다른 말로하면 그렇지. 기본적으로 네가 뭔갈 말하거나 행동하는데 시간이 오래 걸린다는 뜻이야, 실제로 훨씬 빨리 말하고 해도되는 것일 때도 말이야.
"집 주변으로 돌아가다"란 표현 실제로 어떻게 쓰이는지 예시를 들어보자.

Don't go around the houses; just tell me straight, what have you done?

So the phrase done and dusted means work on something is completely finished. When I heard you say dust, I thought you were asking me if I had cleaned the house. No way, I only got the keys yesterday! I haven't even set foot in the house yet.
그러니까 이 표현 "다 끝내고 먼지도 털었어" 뜻이 작업하던 일이 완전히 끝났다는 거구나.

Done and dusted is actually a very common expression. We hear it a lot at work. And usually it means something has been completed successfully, there's no more work to be done on it. Let's hear some examples.
다 끝내고 먼지 털었어는 실제로 정말 흔히 쓰는 표현이야. 직장에서 많이 듣지. 그리고 보통 무언가가 성공적으로 끝나서 이것에 대해선 더 이상 할일이 없다는 뜻이야. 예시를 좀 들어보자.

Examples

The dispute between me and the council about my parking ticket has been resolved. It's done and dusted.
주차권에 대해 나와 위원회사이의 분쟁이 해결됬어, 완전히 끝났어.

Afer two months of hard work, the project is finally done and dusted.
2달 여간 열심히 일한 후에 그 프로젝트가 드디어 끝났어.

About this logo design... as far as I'm concerned, it's done and dusted.

Done and dusted is a popular casual expression, it's used to talk about something that's finished successfully.
다 끝내고 먼지 털었어는 정말 많이 쓰는 편한 표현이구나, 성공적으로 완료된 무언가에 대해 이야기할 때 쓰는거구.

RobYou won't find them in there Helen. Chill pills aren't real. When you tell someone to take a chill pill, you are telling them to calm down and relax. So Helen... relax... chill!

거긴 없을 거야. 진정약은 실제로 있는게 아니거든. 누군가에게 진정약 좀 먹어라고 말하면

그들에게 진정하고 긴장 풀라고 말하는 거야. 그러니까 헬렌 긴장 풀어, 머리 좀 식혀!

RobWell, I'm sure he could give you something to help you relax but this idiom is just a saying to give someone some friendly advice, as you can hear in these examples...

She was getting so stressed about what her boss said to her that I told her to just take a chill pill - everything would be fine.

No, what I mean is that I want to go. 'You've sold it to me' is a very colloquial way of saying 'you've convinced me'. Here are some examples.

아니, 내 말은 나도 가고싶다는 뜻이야. "나한테 그거 팔았어"는 완전 구어체로 나를 "나를 설득시켰어"라는 말이야. 여기 몇 가지 예시가 있어.

A: I lost five pounds after just a week on this new diet. It's definitely worth a try.

RobNo Feifei! The season might be winter but Finn's behaviour, or his mood, is cheerful and lively - like springtime - you know, bright, sunny, flowers growing, new animals being born, birds flying around...

You need to think about it very carefully before it becomes a hot potato. When something becomes a 'hot potato', it becomes a problem and difficult to handle.

I see. You can't hold a hot potato in your hand. It would burn you.

Exactly, you've got it. A hot potato is a phrase we use to refer to difficult or tricky situations, or even people. Here are a few examples:

The shortage of housing supply is fast becoming a hot potato for the council.

(Sound of Li emptying her handbag... Then the door opens and Rob enters the room)

하지만 믿어줘, 내 정신나간 행동에 방식이 있는거야.

You've made a mess all over the floor and you're telling me you've gone mad!

온 바닥을 어질러놓고 네가 미쳤다고 말하고 있는거야?!

No, I haven't gone mad, well I hope not! The phrase 'there's method to my madness' means that although what I'm doing looks like madness I'm doing it deliberately; I have a reason for doing it.

아니, 나 미치지 않았어, 아 그러지  않길 바라고!  "내 정신나간 행동엔 방식이있어"라는 표현이 뜻하는 건 비록 내가 하고 있는 일이 정신나간 행동같이 보이지만, 일부러 그걸 하는 거라는 거야. 그러니까 그걸 하는 이유가 있어.

I'm only joking Li. Of course I know this phrase. 'There's method to my madness' or you could say 'there's method in my madness', means you are doing something that looks strange but you have a plan and really, you are doing something very sensible. 

롭

그냥 농담한거야 리. 물론 나도 그 표현알아. "내 정신나간 행동에 방식이 있어 (혹은 내 정신나간 행동 속에는 방식이 있어)의 뜻은 무언하 이상해보이는 일을 하고 있지만 계획이 있는 거고 정말 합리적인 무언가를 하고 있다는 거야.

Yes, that's exactly right. I've emptied my handbag over the floor because it will be easier and quicker to find my Travelcard. Then I'll re-pack my handbag.
